You know just a few years ago 4K UHD TVs were brand new and everyone was really excited about them. Well its been a few years and so now that 4K has been around for a couple of years, how can Samsung make an improvement on them? Well, for Samsung its the new SUHD TV. And while that one little letter may not seem like a whole lot, Samsung is actually bringing quite a bit to UHD TVs for 2017. We have a new bezel around the edge of the screens which basically puts a bevel on the bezel. So now instead of being a flat strip we have a gradient edge that goes in towards the television panel itself and that is supposed to add some to the depth of things. I just think it looks good. Next we’ve got a new stand design this year – Samsung’s using a very spacious stand that accentuates the curve of the television itself. And on the back of the very best 4K Samsung TVs is a new shearing edge.

But the big improvement for SUHD TVs is something that you can’t see from the outside. Its called quantom dots. These are basically little tiny crystals that produce colors when you show light on them. The technology is designed to produce more pure colors and a wider array of colors and it does that. It does that very well. There are more subtle grades to the color, in fact the new Samsung 4K TVs are capable of producing colors that it can’t even be fed with yet – the content doesn’t exist. But when the content does come around this television is going to be ready for it. Talk about thinking into the future. What you’re seeing right now is Samsung’s brand new smart TV interface. Now it’s based on Tizon, which is an operating system that was developed in conjunction with Intel and Samsung has been pushing this through a number of different devices but its not really taken off. Here on their televisions it looks excellent. It’s not just their smart TV interface, it’s how you interface with the entire television. Everything from switching inputs to adjusting the volume to getting into your streaming apps is controlled by this new operating system. It’s extremely user friendly. Looking at the card style interface that lays along the bottom, we’re reminded of LG’s competing interface – it’s very simple, straightforward and easy to use and a refreshing change from what Samsung used to use.

1080P has been around for a while but it still a solid choice for a new TV in 2017. For their price, I’m very impressed by the quality of 1080ps on the market in 2017. Most Samsung 1080P TVs have a 1920 x 1080 resolution and a clear motion rate of 240 for those that like that extra smooth when you’re watching alot of action. They also tend to come with 2 HDMI inputs, a composite and component input, a USB connection, a cable connection and an RS232 port. I consider Samsung 1080P TVs to be great value for several reasons. The first thing is the picture – the colors are very vibrant, the picture is sharp and it actually looks a lot better than the main TV that I have in my living room. The second thing I like about these TVs are the looks. With only a half inch bezel around the outside of the screen, the whole front of the TV is very minimalist with a small Samsung logo down in the bottom. All of the buttons are on the bottom right on the underside of the TV so you can’t see them. Nice, minimalistic design that functions really well. On Black Friday we’ll hopefully see some fantastic deals on 1080P TVs.

In the last few years Samsung have released a range of curved TVs. There are three main differences in the viewing experience. Immersion, distortion and glare.

When I spent time watching a 55 inch Samsung 4K curved TV these were my observations. Glare isn’t any more of a problem than it is on a normal TV. But distortion can get a little bit weird if you’re looking at the TV from the wrong angle. There is definitely a slightly smaller viewing radius where you wanna be while looking at this screen. That doesn’t mean you can’t look at it from off axis and see everything, it just means that it’s going to look a little bit weird from different angles if you’re trying to watch a movie and get the full cinematic experience.

All Samsung curved TVs have a pretty similar curve radius, and that measurement is the radius that the TV would make if you continued its curve all the way round to make a complete circle. For Samsung, that measurement is 4.2 meters or around 13.5 feet. This means you’ll get the optimal viewing experience if you set about 13.5 feet away from this TV, in the center of this imaginary circle. That’s where the immersion comes in and you really actually notice the curve on this TV and it changes the viewing experience.

Now they’ve made some other changes to their curved TV line up to make them even more immersive. It’s 4k, so of course more pixels makes the image more immersive. The bezels are thinner, to focus more on the content and less on the hardware around it. I welcome all these changes to a TV that make it more immersive. It only becomes a problem though when it’s distracting. 3D for example was supposed to be more immersive but it actually distracted you with the glasses you had to wear or the headaches it caused for some people whilst looking at it. The subtle curve on these TVs isn’t distracting though and as long as you sit somewhere around that 13 foot mark then you’ll get a great viewing experience. In fact if you’re more than 13.5 feet away then you’re too far away and there’s really almost no point, it might as well be a flat panel because you won’t notice the curve when you sit too far away. What’s funny is that when you sit closer than 13 feet away, inside that radius, it gets even more surrounding and the TV seems bigger than it really is.

So immersion tends to be that X factor that determines the difference between a curved and flat TV.

My new TV has HDR! What does that actually mean though?

So if you’ve been shopping for a television on Black Friday, particularly a 4K TV, you’ve probably seen the letters HDR. So what do those mean? HDR stands for High Dynamic Range and ultimately it means trying to represent colors in a more realistic, life-like way. Something that traditional televisions weren’t always the best at. With cameras and photography HDR is really referring to trying to get a camera to behave the way our eyes do. Our irises can expand and contract as light levels change but cameras can’t do that. You have a setting and take a picture. Or you can change the setting and take a picture, but you’re kinda stuck with what you get. HDR technology takes a series of pictures at different luminosity levels and then combines them all into a mashup image. Now with displays like this, we’re really looking at something called nits. Nits is a unit of measurement. It’s a measurement of luminosity which in itself is the brightness level from a source of light. So when you’re shopping for a TV this Black Friday you’re literally nit-picking!

Anyway luminosity relates to two different concepts – contrast which is the different between your brightest whites and darkest black colors on the screen and color representation. The greater the number the greater the range and the better the color representation you’ll get – the more vibrant the images are. In fact, people have said that the jump from 1080p resolution to 4K resolution wasn’t really that noticeable until HDR technology started to get rolled into it. There are a couple of things you need to know before you go out and buy your 4K HDR set on Black Friday though.

Alot of companies are working on HDR right now and there are some competing standards at play. But Samsung is leading the way and this is the future of high resolution displays. So when you are looking for that next TV on Black Friday & Cyber Monday, look for those three letters!

Samsung have released a range of 3D TVs in the last few years. Generally around one inch thick and coming with a nice stand, they also come with four pairs of 3D glasses for 3D viewing. The picture is very clear and the volume surprisingly loud. They are also able to stream regular 2D content but have 3D channels for watching 3D content. When activated and wearing your glasses, its definitely possible to see the 3D quality and its similar to the movie theater experience. Without the glasses its a little fuzzy but with the glasses on it looks very nice. Overall they are great for 3D movies and games.

One of the most confusing things about buying a TV is all these different terms that get thrown around. We’re going to explain what LED is so you can make a better buying decision when choosing a Samsung TV on Black Friday 2016. The most common display type is LCD, which stands for liquid crystal display. It involves having a backlight, usually flourescent, with an LCD screen infront of it. The LCD screen is where the images and the colors actually come from. One of the drawbacks of LCD is that it can never produce true blacks because that screen would have to become completely opaque in order to get a true, rich and deep black. However the advantages of LCD are that its relatively inexpensive these days and they are extremely thin.

LED is actually a bit of a misnomer. An LED TV is just an LCD TV with an LED backlight instead of a cathode backlight. This gives it a couple of advantages. Number one is lower power consumption and number two is even thinner form factors because they’re not nearly as bulky. Number three is that with many high end LED arrays on the back of the TV you can actually enable a feature called micro-dimming. That is to say that the LCD goes black and the LED behind it in that zone can even turn down or turn as low as it can to make the blacks much more true and much more rich. So LED TVs tend to be just higher end LCD TVs.

Plasma TVs have turned into a bit of a value option over time – they have excellent black levels because instead of relying on a backlight with a screen infront of it, the plasma display actually outputs its own light so that means it doesn’t have to output light. You also get extremely fast response times making plasma great for gaming. The disadvantage of plasmas is that compared to high end LCD and LED TVs the colors can be a little bit washed out if you are in daylight or an environment where you don’t have a dark home theater to watch it on. Because the front of the display has to be glass, they tend to get a fair amount of glare making it more difficult again if you don’t have true blackness to watch your TV in.

OLED addresses some of the issues with LCD such as slow response times, so much sharper movement. Aswell, the not very true to like deep black issue if fixed on OLED because like plasma it emits its own light rather than relying on a backlight with a panel infront of it. OLEDs tend to be very expensive but on Black Friday 2016 we should be in line for some great discounts on these TV models, especially from Samsung.

I’ll make this nice and simple for you. If you want a 55 inch Samsung Smart TV on Black Friday, there’s two TVs that you need to consider. First is the Samsung UN55KU6300. This smart LED TV was released in 2016 and has over 500 great reviews on Amazon, averaging 4.5 stars. With 4K Ultra HD and Samsung’s new Smart TV platform built into this model, navigating and streaming content from your devices is very simple. A refresh rate of 120 is effective and ensures that even when watching fast paced action movies you’ll never miss a beat. This makes for a great gaming experience too – I spent several hours playing Call of Duty on one of these screens and didn’t notice any lag whatsoever in the frame rate. Your other option is the Samsung UN55J6200. This has 1080P Full HD and an LED screen that really pops the picture, ensuring great levels of vibrancy and contrast no matter what your watching. Even when looking at this screen in broad daylight the clarity is great and its still possible to see the entirety of the color gamit.

46 inches TVs really hit the sweet spot for me in terms of size and picture quality. I don’t have a huge living room for my TV and so a 46 inch fits perfectly into the space without dominating it. You can still find 4K TVs that are sized around 46 inch, but in my opinion you’ll save a tonne of money and have a pretty much identical experience with a 1080P TV. Samsung’s UN48J5200 is a 2015 model smart TV thats got a stunning 1080P LED display. With HDMI and USB inputs and built in Wi-Fi connectivity, it comes with everything you need and is ideal for use as a secondary screen around the home if you want something bigger as your main screen. Last year on Black Friday & Cyber Monday we saw Samsung join in the fun and slash prices on lots of their 46 inch screens.

The 40 inch TV used to be considered big, but with ever evolving standards its now considered a smaller size for your main screen. There’s several Samsung 40 Inch smart TVs on the market right now and we’re hoping to see discounts on every single model on Black Friday. Cyber Monday in particular is a day to wait for, as last year we saw some brilliant last minute deals on Samsung smart TVs on the Monday after Black Friday. We love the 40 inch UN40J5200 and so do online shoppers – this TV has over 2,000 reviews on Amazon averaging 4 stars. Another great option is the UN40KU6300, a 2016 model that packs 4K resolution. If you’re looking for an older model then you’re more likely to find a better deal on Black Friday – like the UN40H5003 40 inch Samsung TV that was released in 2014. Despite being two years old, it keeps up with the rest in terms of tech specs as it has a 1080P HD screen and is LED.
